Figs are delicious fruits, mostly eaten fresh. Figs are also made into preserves, cake, and dessert fillings. They are easy to peel and bear two to three times a year. The small deciduous trees grow in most locations here in Hawaii. They require regular care and fertilization and adequate drainage. The trees are easily pruned to keep them low enough for harvesting without a ladder. Birds can be the most serious pests. Some improved varieties include 'Brown Turkey' and 'White Kadota.' Both are closed-end types (self-pollinating). 'Brown Turkey' has a low spreading habit, while the 'White Kadota' is a more upright grower. Both lose their leaves in the winter, flushing with new growth in the spring. The 'White Kadota' can be eaten fresh or dried, and the 'Brown Turkey' is for fresh eating. The 'Brown Turkey' is about the size of a golf ball, reddish-pink and very sweet. The 'White Kadota' is about two-thirds the size of a 'Brown Turkey' fruit, yellowish-pink inside and very sweet. |
