Guava Psidium guajava MYRTACEAE

There are many varieties of guavas, including round or oval shaped, several colors, and variations in thickness of pulp. The skin is usually yellow at maturity, but flesh differs with each variety. Flavors range from sweet to acid; with the acid varieties grown for juice and puree processing and the sweet varieties for fresh eating.

The trees are very vigorous and can be grown virtually anywhere in Hawaii. For commercial production, guavas are usually pruned every other year for maintenance, production, and ease of harvesting. The trees produce several times throughout the year.

The main processing varieties are 'Beaumont,' 'Waiakea Pink,' and 'Ka Hua Kula.' All these are heavy producers of pink-fleshed, high-quality, acid guavas.

The dessert guavas of high quality include 'Ruby X Supreme' and 'White Indonesian.' Ruby Supreme is a sweet red-fleshed variety and 'White Indonesian'is a delicious white fruit. Both fruit varieties are considered low acid and are very sweet and delicious.
