Loquat Eriobotrya japonica ROSACEAE

Loquats are small (1-2 inches), ovoid shape, and yellow to orange-colored fruit. They have an easy to peel, thin, velvety skin. The fruit is juicy and firm with a mild sweet taste. It is delicious eaten fresh and can also be prepared in many ways, including jams, preserves, cake fillings, and served in fruit salads.

The tree is vigorous, enjoying most locations here but preferring the upslope areas. The trees need regular care and fertilization for best production. Trees bear fruit one or two times each year.

There are two improved cultivars now available: 'Golden Nugget' and 'Mammoth.'
